The whole message is trying to create a better world through the generations - one person at a time - based on family, travel, and simplicity. But we're mainly trying to promote an ideal. Surfline: While the film is certainly the centerpiece of the project, the website takes on a character of its own, allowing others to relay their own stories and lessons learned from travels, and even links to specific nonprofits like Surfing4Peace.Īamion: Yeah, we're trying to involve different nonprofits and open people's eyes a bit. I wanted to show him through travel and experiencing different cultures. But I wanted to do that without saying anything. I wanted to show my son how fortunate we are to be living the way we live and remind him not to take anything for granted. And as surfers, we're so outrageously fortunate. My dad and I were constantly moving when I was young, and I feel it was a good upbringing. It's a project about family, being a father, and passing along knowledge to my son, Given, through travel.

Surfline: Watching your teaser, we were expecting to see a clip of you charging big Pipe. As The Goodwin Project's tagline states, this is "an adventure in the making." Surfline caught up with Aamion to find out more - but not much more. They're currently bringing a small film crew with them through 18 countries and four seasons to document how the Goodwins are changed by their travels, how they affect change themselves, and how a legacy of simplicity is passed down from parent to child.

More than anything, says the film’s director Jess Bianchi, Given is meant to show people not that the Goodwins’ way of life is the right way, or that they’re the poster children for an alternative lifestyle, but simply there’s a way to get by that exists outside the norm. Aamion Goodwin had an unorthodox upbringing. A product of his father’s rejection of the constraints of modern society, Aamion spent much of his childhood bouncing between Fiji, Australia, and Kauai.
